Act as if
Renowned Harvard psychologist, Jerome Bruner, famously said “You’re more likely to act yourself into feeling than feel yourself into action.”
Whatever it is you want to be, perhaps the best way to become that person is to already act as if you already are that person.
Maybe you don’t consider yourself much of a runner, but if you go running today as if you’re a runner, and you make this choice again the following week, and the week after that, eventually it’s not an act — you’re a runner.
If you consider yourself a shy person who struggles to speak up, but you make a handful of conscious decisions each week to act as if you were the kind of person who confidently speaks up, eventually — you guessed it — you are simply that person.
Doing is becoming is being.
